Recommended ReadingThe following authors and titles are a partial list from my library. Though you will not be able to read all, but you may see a title that may encourage you. The key for a true disciple of Christ is to read and rightly understand the Scripture above all. Choose a word for word translation of the Bible; KJV, RSV, ASB, ESV. Be careful with King James (KJV), since our English vernacular and meaning of words have change dramatically since 1611. Stay away from the thought for thought translations that tend to interpret passages for the reader. Especially avoid the current trend of what I call designer study Bibles where contemporary preachers and teachers put their own slant on the Scripture misleading the reader into destructive heresies. Most of these authors have pasted, just as the authors of the New Testament writings, the key here is not to fixate on these past saints and end up with tunnel vision. It is Christ in you now; you are responsible to make the theology of the New Covenant practical. Avoid becoming a theological intellectual who may know sound doctrine, but quite useless in abiding in the true Christ, unable to work out your own salvation and be used of God now. These saints listed here are dead and gone, and now God is looking for those who will pick of the torch they carried and press on to the high call of God in Christ Jesus. The following passage reinforces this; we must know Christ for ourselves and obey Him perfectly! "For when one says, 'I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,' are you not being merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building" (1 Corinthians 3:4-9).
